Skenes attended Tualatin High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He was a standout pitcher and hitter in baseball, earning all-state honors as a senior.
After graduating from high school, Skenes attended the University of Oregon, where he played college baseball for the Oregon Ducks. He was a three-year starter for the Ducks and was named to the All-Pac-12 Conference team twice. In 14 starts for the Curve, Skenes posted a 3.50 ERA and struck out 93 batters in 72 innings pitched. He was promoted to the Indianapolis Indians of the Triple-A International League in June 2022. In 10 starts for the Indians, Skenes posted a 2.96 ERA and struck out 62 batters in 55 innings pitched.
Skenes made his Major League debut with the Pirates on August 27, 2022, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out seven batters. Skenes finished the 2022 season with a 3.29 ERA and 159 strikeouts in 146.2 innings pitched between the Curve, Indians, and Pirates.
